The top prosecutor overseeing a criminal mortgage fraud investigation into New York Attorney General Letitia James, Erik Siebert, resigned from his position on Friday after President Donald Trump publicly called for his removal. Siebert's resignation email cited personal reasons and his pleasure in leading the DOJ employees.

• President Trump stated he had lost confidence in Siebert, claiming his souring began after learning Virginia's two Democratic U.S. senators supported Siebert's nomination.
• Siebert had previously expressed doubts about the strength of the mortgage fraud case against James, as well as a separate investigation into former FBI Director James Comey.
• The mortgage fraud investigation against James stems from allegations by Federal Housing Finance Agency chief Bill Pulte regarding her Norfolk, Virginia, home and Brooklyn home. This investigation is also being handled by Justice Department official Ed Martin, who posed for a controversial photograph outside James' Brooklyn home.
