The Central Bank of Kenya (CBK) has mandated new cybersecurity guidelines for banks and established the Banking Sector Cybersecurity Operations Centre (BS-SOC) to bolster financial system protection against increasing cyber threats.
- Kenyan banks lost over Sh1.5 billion to hackers in cyber and technology-related fraud, with Sh1.6 billion stolen from bank accounts last year, primarily via mobile banking platforms (Sh810.68 million).
- The BS-SOC, managed under CBK’s Cyber Fusion Unit, will monitor threats, coordinate incident response, and conduct digital forensics and investigations.
- All regulated institutions must comply with new requirements and report cybersecurity incidents to the BS-SOC under the Computer Misuse and Cybercrime (Critical Information Infrastructure and Cybercrime Management) Regulations, 2024.
