Empower New Energy has invested $2.5 million (Sh323 million) in a solar power project at Abyssinia Group of Industries' Awasi steel plant in Kenya, increasing the site's total solar capacity to 9MW.

• The 25-year power supply agreement, signed in September 2025, will deliver approximately 14 gigawatt hours (GWh) of clean electricity annually.
• The project aims to cut Abyssinia's power costs, reduce exposure to volatile grid tariffs and diesel prices, and eliminate over 7,000 metric tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions yearly.
• Abyssinia CEO, Jateen Patel, emphasized that reliable and affordable energy is critical for steel production, and this expansion will lower operating costs and strengthen competitiveness.
• The plant will be constructed and operated by Nairobi-based Spenomatic, known for its extensive portfolio of solar installations in the region.
