NTSA Asked to Remove Some 14-Seater Matatus From the Road

The vans have been plying Kenyans roads for years...
✨ Key Highlights
The Long Distance Drivers and Conductors Association (LoDCCA) has called for the removal of certain 14-seater matatus from Kenyan roads, particularly the Toyota Hiace H200 series, citing them as unsafe cargo vehicles not fit for passenger transport. This follows recent fatal accidents on the Nairobi-Nakuru highway.
- On Monday morning, LoDCCA faulted the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) for failing to regulate the use of these vehicles after 20 people died in two separate accidents over the weekend involving Toyota Hiace H200 series matatus.
- The association emphasized that the Toyota Hiace H200 series was designed for cargo, making its structure weak for passenger safety, unlike the safer Toyota Hiace H300 series.
- LoDCCA also criticized NTSA for poor leadership, lack of credible driver licensing, and delayed processing of essential documents, contributing to rising road fatalities.
