Kenya's electricity imports surged by 27.8 percent in the year to June 2025, primarily due to increased supply from Ethiopia through the Ethiopia–Kenya power import program.
- Imports rose by 334.05 GWh to 1,533.85 GWh, with Ethiopia supplying 83 percent (1,274.42 GWh) of the total.
- The Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) reported that these imports account for 10.6 percent of Kenya’s energy mix and saved the country an estimated $10 million annually.
- The increase follows the first full year of commercial operations of the 200 MW high-voltage direct current (HVDC) interconnector, which became active in December 2023.
