The United Nations Security Council has approved a resolution to transform the current UN-backed security mission in Haiti into a larger, full-fledged military force to combat rampant gang violence.

• The new force can have a maximum of 5,500 uniformed personnel, comprising police officers and soldiers.
• Kenya currently contributes approximately 1,000 police officers to the existing Multinational Security Mission (MSS).
• President of Haiti's Transitional Presidential Council Laurent Saint-Cyr described Haiti as "a country at war, a contemporary Guernica, a human tragedy on America's doorstep."
