Tanzania has dropped its prohibition on business activities for Kenyans that were previously reserved for locals, following bilateral talks between officials from both nations. The Business Licensing (Prohibition of Business Activities for Non-Citizens) Order, 2025, introduced in July, had caused significant concern among the Kenyan business community.

• The order aimed to reserve at least 15 business activities exclusively for Tanzanian citizens, including retail trade and mobile money operations.
• Caroline Karugu, Principal Secretary for East African Community Affairs, confirmed that no Kenyan business has been affected and none will be in the future.
• The original order was gazetted under Government Notice No. 487A following amendments to the Finance Act, 2025.
