Tanzania has reassured Kenyan businesses that they will be exempt from a new law restricting foreign participation in certain sectors, following bilateral consultations between Nairobi and Dodoma.

The Tanzanian Business Licensing (Prohibition of Business Activities for Non-Citizens) Order, 2025, will not affect current Kenyan traders.
Caroline Karugu, Principal Secretary for East African Community Affairs, confirmed that no Kenyan business has been affected and none will be in the future.
The order, gazetted on July 28, 2025, reserves at least 15 business activities exclusively for Tanzanian citizens, including retail, wholesale, and mobile money operations.
