Microsoft is automatically installing a new “Microsoft 365 Companion” app on Windows 11 systems without user permission, a move sparking strong backlash.

• The rollout began in October 2025 and is expected to be completed by the end of December 2025.
• The app launches automatically at startup, albeit minimized, and offers quick access to files, events, and contacts via mini-windows.
• While enterprise IT administrators have some control, personal users currently have no opt-out option before installation.
