A Kenyan court has ordered the unfreezing of nine bank accounts belonging to former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko, holding over Ksh 537 million, ruling that the Assets Recovery Agency (ARA) failed to provide sufficient evidence of money laundering or proceeds of crime.

• The High Court determined that the ARA could not substantiate claims that the funds were illegally acquired during Sonko's tenure as governor.
• Sonko's lawyer, Harrison Kinyanjui, stated that the agency's case relied on suspicion rather than concrete proof, and that Sonko successfully demonstrated legitimate pre-gubernatorial businesses and assets.
• This victory for Sonko comes amidst other ongoing legal battles, including a Ksh 357 million graft case where an acquittal was overturned, and a separate Ksh 24 million graft case where he has been ruled to have a case to answer.
