Following a devastating gas explosion in Nairobi's Huruma estate that killed eight people and left 80 families homeless, former governor Mike Sonko has urged his successor, Governor Johnson Sakaja, to establish more fire stations across the city.

• The slow response was criticized by residents, with one claiming emergency teams lacked fuel, despite a new station nearby.
• Sonko's rescue team committed to facilitating transport and purchasing coffins for the eight victims.
• Nairobi currently has only 11 functioning fire stations, two of which were the sole firefighting infrastructure since independence until others were established in 2019.
• The Huruma incident comes just a week after another fire in Mukuru kwa Reuben’s Sinai area killed two people and displaced 200 families.
