A new species of poisonous frog, Ranitomeya hwata, has been discovered in the Peruvian Amazon. This brightly colored amphibian is remarkably small and inhabits unique bamboo forest environments.

• The frog measures just 15 mm long, making it the smallest species of the Ranitomeya genus.
• The discovery was announced by the National Service of Protected Natural Areas by the State (Sernanp).
• The new species lives exclusively in the bamboo forests of the Guadua genus, utilizing hollow stems for reproduction, and was found in Alto Purus National Park.
