Salome Muhia, Principal Secretary for the State Department for Correctional Service, has been ordered to appear in court on October 17 over an alleged Ksh12 million hospital bill owed to Mbagathi Hospital for inmate treatment. This follows a previous High Court order for the Kenya Prisons Service to pay at least Ksh10 million within 14 days.

The outstanding bill for inmate medical services dates back to 2018, with only Ksh6.7 million paid out of Ksh12 million.
Mbagathi Hospital had previously suspended services to inmates, demanding arrears, but the High Court ordered the immediate resumption of treatment on September 8.
Muhia noted the Kenya Prisons budget is Ksh192 per inmate per day, falling short of the required Ksh275.
