Israel has declared a ceasefire and begun withdrawing troops from Gaza following a truce brokered by US President Donald Trump, allowing thousands of displaced Palestinians to start returning home. The ceasefire also initiates the release of remaining hostages held by Hamas and Palestinian prisoners by Israel.

• Hamas is set to release 47 hostages and the remains of one held since 2014, from the 251 abducted two years ago.
• Israel plans to release 250 Palestinian prisoners, along with 1,700 Gazans detained since October 7, 2023.
• The EU mission at the Rafah border will reopen a pedestrian crossing on October 14.
