Amnesty International has accused Tanzanian authorities of "systematic human rights violations" that are escalating ahead of presidential elections, from which opposition candidates have been excluded.

• Amnesty documented widespread abuses, including enforced disappearance, torture, and extrajudicial killings of opposition figures, between January 2024 and October 2025.
• The main opposition party, Chadema, has been excluded from the upcoming October 29 elections.
• Chadema leader Tundu Lissu is currently on trial for treason, a charge carrying the death penalty.
