Professor Michael Ndurumo, the first deaf Professor in East Africa, has been named the 2025 United Nations in Kenya Person of the Year for his profound contributions to disability rights and inclusive education.
- Prof Ndurumo was honored for a lifetime of work, including developing the Kenya Sign Language (KSL), which is now recognized in the 2010 Constitution.
- He was also instrumental in drafting legislation requiring sign language interpretation for news bulletins on Kenyan television, and shaping the Persons with Disabilities Act (2003).
- The award, presented by UNON Director-General Zainab Hawa Bangura and UN Resident Coordinator Dr. Stephen Jackson, was given during the celebration of the United Nations’ 80th anniversary.
