To control the burgeoning lion population in Malawi’s Majete and Liwonde wildlife reserves, the Department of National Parks and Wildlife (DNPW), in collaboration with African Parks, has begun administering contraceptives to reproductive-aged lions.
- The initiative aims to address overpopulation, which has led to lions breaking into surrounding communities and a decline in antelope populations due to increased predation.
- Brighton Kumchedwa, director of the DNPW, stated these contraceptives are a temporary measure, with effects lasting around five years, while long-term solutions are explored.
- Between January and October 2025, Malawi recorded 19 human deaths and numerous injuries from human-wildlife conflicts involving various animals.
