Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja announced plans to extend the county’s school feeding program to informal schools. This initiative aims to ensure children in informal settlements also benefit from daily meals provided by the county government.

Currently, the program feeds 316,000 learners in 230 public schools using 17 central kitchens.
Governor Sakaja indicated that extending the program to all informal schools would require 69 additional kitchens, highlighting a budget constraint.
As a short-term solution, the county is mapping public schools near informal institutions to allow children from informal areas access to meals during lunchtime.
He also addressed the broader challenge of limited public school spaces in Nairobi, with only 210 public schools for a population of over seven million people.
