Over 100 new mothers are being detained at Mama Lucy Kibaki Hospital in Kenya due to unpaid medical bills, with many unable to leave days after delivery. The hospital attributes the situation to patients' poor financial planning and failure to register for the Social Health Authority (SHA).

• Many of the detained mothers are teenage girls from Kayole, and some are from neighboring countries like Uganda and Tanzania, with bills exceeding Ksh. 100,000.
• Fredrick Obwanda, the hospital’s CEO, stated that unpaid bills strain operations, costing the institution approximately Ksh. 2 million per day in waived fees.
• The hospital insists on SHA registration or cash payment, warning that the institution would shut down if services were consistently provided for free.
