Kenya's government, led by Cooperatives and MSMEs CS Wycliffe Oparanya, has established a 15-member national and county steering committee to revitalize the coffee sector. This initiative aims to significantly boost coffee production within two years, targeting an increase from the current 50,000 metric tonnes to 102,000 metric tonnes by 2028.
- The committee, appointed via a Kenya Gazette dated October 31, will be chaired by former senator Njeru Ndwiga.
- Its mandate includes developing strategies to revive coffee production in traditional areas, introducing it to non-traditional regions, and mobilizing resources for coffee cooperatives.
- The New KPCU has been distributing over 20 million seedlings annually in the 2023/2025 and 2025/2026 financial years to support this goal.
- In the 2024/2025 coffee year, Kenyan farmers earned Sh36.5 billion from the auction of 673,844 bags at the Nairobi Coffee Exchange (NCE).
