The Kisumu Safari Train is expected to resume operations by next month, coinciding with the completion of repairs on the damaged Uplands–Kijabe–Longonot Meter Gauge Railway (MGR) line.
- The restoration of the railway line, damaged by rainfall in April 2024, is currently over 70 per cent complete, with a target reopening in December 2025.
- Kenya Railways Corporation announced that the restored line will facilitate the resumption of the Kisumu Safari Train and freight operations to Uganda, South Sudan, and beyond.
- The rehabilitation involves rebuilding culverts and stabilising embankments, with an estimated restoration cost of Ksh1 billion, as previously stated by former Transport Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen.
