- Less than 17 percent of farmers are insured in Africa, with agricultural insurance accounting for under 1 percent of total premiums in Kenya.
- Phocas Nyandwi, Regional Director at Africa Re, highlighted that Africa contributes barely 2 percent of global agricultural insurance premiums despite agriculture making up about 30 percent of Sub-Saharan Africa’s GDP.
- The Insurance Regulatory Authority (IRA) reports Kenya’s total insurance penetration at about 2.4 percent of GDP, significantly below the global average of around 7 percent.
