The Ministry of Environment, Climate Change and Forestry has launched a comprehensive 10-year restoration plan for the degraded **Mt. Elgon** landscape, aiming to enhance unity through peace-building and safeguard community livelihoods.

• The program targets rehabilitation of 103,000 hectares, including 35,000 hectares of degraded forest and 68,000 hectares of farmlands, with an annual goal of planting 10 million trees.
• Dr. Harry Kimtai, Principal Secretary for the State Department of Mining and a local of **Mt. Elgon**, has been designated as the patron to lead this **Ksh. 10.1 billion** initiative (2025-2035).
• Mt. Elgon, designated a transboundary biosphere reserve by **UNESCO** in **2023**, holds an estimated annual economic value of Ksh. 115 billion and is home to unique species like the endangered **Mt. Elgon Chameleon**.
