The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the United Nations Capital Development Fund (UNCDF), and the World Resources Institute (WRI) have launched two climate-focused projects in Kenya: a nationwide rollout of solar-powered cold storage units and an initiative to electrify two- and three-wheel vehicles.
- The solar cold storage project aims to deploy 1,000 units, preserve 5,000 tonnes of food, benefit 60,000 smallholders, and avoid 4.8 million tonnes of CO₂e over its lifetime.
- The e-mobility project targets approximately 68,000 electric vehicles across Kilifi, Kiambu, and Kajiado, expecting to cut 1 million tonnes of emissions and create around 68,000 green jobs over ten years.
- UNDP Kenya Resident Representative Dr Jean-Luc Stalon highlighted that Kenya’s post-harvest losses present a $2.1 billion opportunity.
