A prominent Zimbabwean opposition politician, Job Sikhala, was arrested in South Africa on Friday for alleged possession of explosives. He was reportedly detained with another individual in a vehicle containing 26 blasting cartridges and detonating devices.

• Mr. Sikhala is a fierce critic of the Zimbabwean government and a former lawmaker with the Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) party.
• He was released in January 2024 after spending over 18 months in prison following a conviction for inciting public violence.
• The arrest comes amidst high political tensions in Zimbabwe, with the ruling Zanu-PF recently announcing support for constitutional changes to extend President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s term.
