A carbon credit scheme in northern Tanzania, linked to Volkswagen, is raising fears among the Maasai community who claim it could destroy their traditional way of life. The project, dismissed as "greenwashing" by several NGOs, offers the Maasai money to implement a strict rotational grazing system intended to capture more carbon.

• The scheme covers an area of 16,000 square kilometres (6,200 square miles), roughly 20 times the size of New York City.
• Local Maasai are offered $2 per hectare to sign a 40-year contract.
• The scheme is run by Volkswagen partner Soils for the Future Tanzania (SftFTZ).
• Maasai lawyer Joseph Oleshangay called the project a "scam."
• Verra, the main international body for validating carbon credits, suspended credits from a similar project in Zimbabwe for which Volkswagen was also a client due to exaggerated benefits.
