The State Department for Housing and Urban Development has been honored with a certified bronze Gigacity award for its Affordable Housing Programme (AHP), recognizing its efforts in promoting urbanization and providing decent housing in Kenya.
- Housing Principal Secretary Charles Hinga received the award in Cape Town, South Africa, and was also recognized for his contributions to the growth of megacities in Kenya through the smart cities initiative.
- The award from the World Broadband Association (WBBA) acknowledges the department's success in meeting established criteria and reviewing the Building Code to increase high-speed gigabit connectivity.
- Currently, over 214,057 housing units are under construction across all 47 counties under the AHP, which has already created over 300,000 direct and indirect jobs.
