The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) has recommended the disbandment of Kenya's traffic unit and periodic rotation of officers due to widespread corruption and extortion.
- An audit conducted between February and June 2025 revealed deep-rooted corruption across the National Police Service (NPS), with the traffic department being the most compromised.
- EACC Director of Preventive Services Vincent Okongo and EACC Secretary and CEO Abdi Mohamud presented the report, highlighting that officers routinely collect "protection fees" from Public Service Vehicles (PSVs), matatu SACCOs, and boda boda riders, often fabricating charges for non-compliance.
- The report also cited irregularities in recruitment, transfers, disciplinary procedures, and weak oversight mechanisms. Inspector General Douglas Kanja confirmed the service will act on the findings within 30 days.
