The Refugee Consortium of Kenya (RCK) has warned of refugee exploitation by predatory lenders in refugee-hosting areas, due to a lack of proper documentation denying them access to regulated credit.

• RCK Executive Director Barlet Colly Jaji stated this issue perpetuates economic inequalities and traps many refugee and host families in poverty.
• Kenya currently hosts 853,074 refugees and asylum seekers as of February 2025, making it the fifth-largest refugee-hosting country in Africa.
• The presence of refugees boosts Turkana County’s Gross Regional Product (GRP) by over 3% and increases income per local person by 0.5%.
