The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) announced that Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) contribute Sh53 billion annually in taxes, primarily from Pay As You Earn (PAYE) remittances. This statement was made during the second annual NGOs Awards, which celebrated various organizations for their impact across Kenya.

  • KRA Chairman Ndiritu Muriithi stated that the Sh53 billion collected is mainly from PAYE for staff employed by the approximately 11,000 registered NGOs.
  • According to the Public Benefit Organizations Regulatory Authority (PBORA), the sector received Sh196 billion in funding in 2023/24 and employed 79,350 people.
  • Compassion International was named NGO of the year, while Dr. Emily Koech of CIHEB received the CEO of the year award, and Eric Omondi was recognized as the people’s champion.
