A parliamentary inquiry committee has begun public hearings in Kenya's Rift Valley to investigate significant disparities in tea farmer bonus payments, with some farmers receiving as low as Sh10 per kilogram of green leaf.

• The parliamentary inquiry committee, chaired by Tigania West MP Dr. John Mutunga, will visit seven factories, including Rukuriri tea factory in Embu, which paid the highest bonus of Sh57.50 per kg.
• The investigation, running from November 18 to 26, will analyze the entire tea value chain, focusing on pricing, operational costs, and institutional inefficiencies to understand why payments vary so widely across regions.
• The probe aims to establish factors contributing to reduced payments and will involve officials from the Ministry of Agriculture, the Tea Board of Kenya (TBK), and the Kenya Tea Development Agency (KTDA), with a report due in parliament on December 2.
