Meta has begun rolling out a new feature allowing WhatsApp users in Europe to chat with contacts on select third-party messaging services directly through the app. This significant development, in progress for over three years, is a direct result of compliance with the European Union’s Digital Markets Act (DMA).

  • The first two interoperable services are BirdyChat and Haiket, supporting text messages, images, videos, voice notes, and file attachments at launch.
  • The feature, which is opt-in, requires third-party apps to use the same level of end-to-end encryption (E2EE) as WhatsApp.
  • While currently limited to Europe due to regulatory pressure, its expansion elsewhere, including Kenya and the rest of Africa, is not legally mandated and seems unlikely without similar market or regulatory forces.
