Dr. Sonia Nzilani, Makueni County Executive Committee Member for Trade, Marketing, Industry, Culture, and Tourism, passed away on Saturday, November 22nd, 2025. She was found unresponsive at her home in Makindu.

Her death was announced by Makueni Governor Mutula Kilonzo Junior, who praised her commitment to public service and environmental conservation.
Before her county role, Dr. Nzilani was a Lecturer and Head of Department of Hydrology and Aquatic Sciences at South Eastern Kenya University (SEKU).
She held a Ph.D. from the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences, Austria, and two Master's degrees from Cadiz University (Spain) and the University of Bologna (Italy).
Dr. Nzilani had over 17 years of experience in consultancy and was the Founder and Chairperson of the Kibwezi Center for Sustainability.
