This call comes amid increasing safety concerns regarding poorly maintained or improperly installed lifts in high-rise buildings.

• The push for safer standards was made during the inaugural International Sourcing Exposition for Elevators and Escalators (ISEE) Africa 2025 in Nairobi.
• Zakaria Lukorito, Director for Standards Development at the Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS), emphasized the importance of regulatory oversight to prevent dangerous accidents.
• Margaret Ogai, from the Engineers Board of Kenya (EBK), highlighted existing local technical capacity to support safe elevator operations, while Rose Kananu, General Manager of the Kenya Property Developers Association (KPDA), noted that demand for elevators is rising due to affordable housing development.
