Kenya is missing out on over Sh670 billion ($5.2 billion) in potential annual export earnings due to an unfavorable domestic policy environment, according to a new report by the Kenya Association of Manufacturers (KAM). The report highlights critical setbacks including high power costs, poor trade logistics, and policy gaps that have led to a significant decline in export competitiveness.
- The annual opportunity cost of inaction on export competitiveness is estimated at Sh261.3 billion ($2.01 billion), potentially accumulating to over Sh780 billion ($6 billion) in three years.
- The report, compiled in partnership with German development agency GIZ, notes that resolving these constraints could unlock approximately Sh325 billion ($2.5 billion) in additional exports.
- KAM Chairperson Jane Karuku emphasized that weak domestic value chains and an over-reliance on imports contribute to the country's export underperformance.
