A fatal road accident in Lugari on Tuesday night involving a 14-seater matatu and a stationary trailer claimed the lives of at least eight people, with several others injured. The matatu, reportedly speeding, lost control and rammed into the trailer, which had developed mechanical problems on the Eldoret–Webuye highway.

• Seven people died instantly, and another succumbed to injuries en route to the hospital.
• The Western regional police boss, Issa Mohamud, confirmed the fatalities.
• The driver of the trailer, which was transporting fertiliser, fled the scene, and residents were seen scrambling for the fertiliser after the crash.
• This incident adds to the alarming statistic of 4,458 road accident deaths in Kenya between January and December this year, a rise of 147 fatalities compared to last year, according to the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA).
