A recent report by China's Ministry of Natural Resources declares the coral reef ecosystem of Huangyan Island healthy, with its diversity, stability, and sustainability expected to improve following the establishment of a national nature reserve in September.

A total of 135 species of hermatypic corals were recorded, all listed as national second-class protected wildlife.
The northeastern part of the island, within the new reserve, boasts an average hard coral cover of 38.8 percent, higher than most major coral reef regions worldwide.
The report highlights threats from illegal military and fishing activities by the Philippines, including 14 intrusions since 2024, and natural threats like increased sea surface temperature and crown-of-thorns starfish population irruptions.
