President William Ruto has announced the establishment of a new, strengthened Anti-Narcotics Unit (ANU) within the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) to combat illicit substance consumption and its financial networks. The announcement was made during his New Year's address on December 31 in Eldoret State Lodge.
- The ANU will be expanded from 200 officers to 700 officers and will receive advanced paramilitary training.
- The unit's operational capacity will be comparable to the elite Anti-Terrorism Police Unit (ATPU).
- It will be equipped with modern surveillance, intelligence, forensic, and financial investigation capabilities, working closely with NACADA, National Intelligence Service (NIS), and other agencies.
- The ANU will also be mandated to trace, seize, and forfeit assets linked to drug trafficking, with direct engagement of the Assets Recovery Agency (ARA) from seizure to forfeiture.
- President Ruto issued a stern warning that any public officer, including those in security agencies, found aiding drug traffickers will face prosecution and immediate removal from office.
