Shining Hope for Communities (SHOFCO) Founder and CEO Dr. Kennedy Odede has launched a boat-riding competition at Luanda Kotieno Beach in Rarieda, Siaya County, to combat the prevalent "fish-for-sex" practice (jaboya) that exploits female fish traders in Lake Victoria communities.
- The jaboya practice, involving transactional sex for fish, contributes to an HIV prevalence of about 26.2 per cent in lake beach communities.
- Dr. Odede stated, "This isn’t just about boats. It’s about dignity and opportunity. We are supporting women to conduct their fish businesses independently, without relying on men who exploit them."
- The initiative, which attracted over 5,000 spectators, plans to expand to other Lake Victoria beaches in Kisumu, Homa Bay, and Siaya counties and includes skills training, financial literacy, and health education to address the jaboya economy.
