The Kenyan government is initiating a revival plan for the struggling cashew nut industry, aiming to generate strong economic growth and job creation. This initiative seeks to boost annual production and address declining output that has affected incomes and export earnings.

• The revived sector is projected to create up to 350,000 jobs and contribute more than Sh30 billion to the economy.
• Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Sen. Mutahi Kagwe announced the turnaround strategy in Kilifi County.
• Kenya currently produces about 13,000 tonnes annually against an installed processing capacity of 45,000 tonnes.
• Kenya Agricultural and Livestock Research Organisation (KALRO) Mtwapa Centre has developed a new disease-tolerant, high-yielding cashew variety, with 20,000 seedlings ready for distribution.
• A high-level stakeholder meeting will be convened to fast-track a master plan for the sector.
