The Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) announced the discovery of Samuel Macharia Wanjohi, a porter who went missing on December 23, 2025, during a climb of Mt. Kenya. His body was found on January 9, 2026, after an 18-day search operation.

• Macharia Wanjohi, a veteran guide with 15 years of experience, was found at Hinde Valley, approximately 4,300 meters above sea level.
• The search involved the KWS Mountain Search and Rescue Unit, rangers, and the National Police Service, utilizing both aerial and ground operations against harsh conditions.
• Macharia disappeared along the Sirimon-Shipton route between Old Moses Camp and Shipton’s Camp during a trek with guides, porters, and two Japanese guests.
