Kenya is reviving a Ksh 250 billion mega expansion plan for Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA), aiming to solidify its position as East and Central Africa's leading aviation hub. The project, led by the Kenya Airports Authority (KAA), seeks to address current capacity issues and regional competition.

The expansion includes a new X-shaped passenger terminal with an initial capacity for 10 million passengers, expandable to 15 million.
A crucial 4.8-kilometre second runway is scheduled for completion by June 2027 to allow simultaneous take-offs and landings.
Transport Cabinet Secretary Davis Chirchir confirmed the government's commitment to modernising JKIA, following the cancellation of a previous deal with the Adani Group.
The project, funded by international development banks including the African Development Bank and the World Bank, will begin construction in January 2026, with the main terminal expected by 2029.
