Kenya has refuted claims of economic tensions with China, with Foreign Affairs Principal Secretary Korir Sing’Oei stating that reports of a strained trade relationship are “completely unfounded.” This comes as Kenya simultaneously pursues market access with China and trade agreements with the United States, following the recent extension of the AGOA pact by the US House of Representatives.
- Kenya and China concluded negotiations on December 19, 2025, for an Early Harvest Arrangement under a broader economic partnership agreement.
- The US House of Representatives voted 340 to 54 to extend the AGOA pact until 2028, which provides duty-free access to the U.S. market for eligible African countries.
- The previous lapse of AGOA on September 30, 2025, led to tariffs of up to 28 per cent on Kenya’s apparel exports to the US, valued at more than Ksh77 billion ($600 million) annually.
