The United States government under Donald Trump has announced the termination of Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Somali immigrants, giving affected individuals 60 days to leave the country or face deportation.

• Approximately 2,471 Somali nationals are currently protected under TPS, with an additional 1,383 applications pending.
• The deadline for affected Somalis to leave the US is March 17.
• Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem stated the decision was made because Somalia no longer meets the legal threshold for the program, and "allowing Somali nationals to remain temporarily in the United States is contrary to our national interests."
• TPS for Somalia was first granted in 1991 and has been renewed multiple times by both Republican and Democratic administrations.
• The Trump administration has also moved to end TPS protections for nationals from Venezuela, Haiti, Afghanistan, and Nepal.
