Kenya has received a significant boost as a bill extending the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA) for an additional three years was passed by the United States House of Representatives. This extension provides much-needed relief and confidence for Kenya's textile and apparel sectors, safeguarding numerous jobs and fostering continued growth.
- The extension allows duty-free access to the US market for Kenyan products until December 31, 2028, and includes refunds for duties paid since the original September 2025 expiry.
- Trade CS Lee Kinyanjui emphasized the ministry's goal to expand Kenya's export basket beyond textiles under the AGOA framework.
- In 2024, Kenya exported apparel and textiles worth approximately Sh60.6 billion (USD470 million) to the US under AGOA, a 19.2 percent increase from 2023; the sector directly employs over 80,000 people.
