The National Authority for the Campaign Against Alcohol and Drug Abuse (NACADA) has shut down 15 treatment and rehabilitation facilities following a nationwide inspection in November 2025 due to severe violations, including expired medicines and unsafe structures. This crackdown is part of an initiative to assess and improve Kenya’s addiction treatment capacity.

Only 135 out of 236 facilities inspected were fully accredited, offering nearly 3,800 residential beds.
The inspection, conducted by a multi-agency team, found 30 facilities failed to meet minimum standards, with 15 issued immediate closure notices.
NACADA reported that over 1.3 million Kenyans urgently need treatment for alcohol and drug use disorders, highlighting a critical shortage of public and specialized services.
