The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has announced a crackdown on vehicles using blinding strobe and floodlights in Nairobi, following public complaints about increased road danger. This enforcement targets illegally modified vehicles, especially matatus, and builds on existing directives banning unauthorized emergency lighting.

• NTSA escalated the matter to Nairobi City County for coordinated enforcement.
• The crackdown follows a directive from Douglas Kanja, then Deputy Inspector General of Police (now IG), issued on February 16, 2024.
• The directive references Section 34 of the Traffic Act and Rule 83 of the Traffic Rules, which restrict emergency lights to authorized vehicles such as police and ambulances.
• Similar efforts are underway in Laikipia County, where the Nanyuki Municipal Board is cracking down on vehicles with modified exhausts exceeding 84 decibels.
