A new cotton ginnery in Mpeketoni, Lamu County, is 95 per cent complete, signaling a revival in cotton production and drawing youth back to farming in the region. This development is a joint initiative involving the national government, Thika Cloth Mills (TCM), and the Lamu County government.

The ginnery is expected to begin installing ginning machines in February and will employ hundreds of residents upon completion.
Hesmond Olweny, Cotton Development Officer at Thika Cloth Mills, noted the ginnery addresses long-standing logistical and security challenges, including transport risks due to Al-Shabaab.
The price of cotton has increased from Sh52 to Sh72 per kilogram, attracting approximately 1,000 youth cotton farmers, many holding leadership roles within the cooperative.
