Damiba, who seized power in January 2022 and was overthrown eight months later, faces charges including "criminal embezzlement of public funds" and a "murder plot" against Traoré.
The handover included a promise from Burkina Faso to ensure Damiba's "physical integrity, dignity and fair‑trial rights," and to exclude the death penalty.
The current Burkinabè junta, led by Traoré, has recently reinstated the death penalty, including for crimes of high treason.
