A Kenyan Gender-Based Violence (GBV) taskforce has recommended mandatory CCTV camera installation in all short-stay rentals and lodgings by September 31, 2026, linking these facilities to a rise in GBV cases. This recommendation comes after a report to President William Ruto highlighted that 1,639 women were killed between 2022 and 2024, with 77 percent of these cases committed by intimate partners or known individuals.

• The report found that women aged 30 to 44 are most affected, with Nairobi, Nakuru, and Meru counties recording the highest numbers.
• The Technical Working Group (TWG), chaired by former Deputy Chief Justice Dr. Nancy Baraza, submitted the report, emphasizing systemic failures in addressing the crisis.
• The recommendations also include declaring GBV and femicide a national crisis, legal recognition of femicide as a distinct crime, and criminalizing out-of-court settlements.
